Click Start, click Run, type MSCONFIG, click OK, click the BOOT.INI tab, and
make sure the /BOOTLOG box is checked.

I actually don't know where it drops the file - I can't find one on hand,
and the KB doesn't list any articles with either "boot log" or "bootlog" for
Windows XP! I'll have to dig a bit for that one for you.

From memory it's ntblog (NT Boot LOG) in windir.

If you hold F8 when booting you'll get the boot menu where you can =
choose to log it. This is one you have to remember. You'll only find it =
by searching for boot logging not boot log (and search previous versions =
of NT's database/resource kit). Smart eh.

Hi David, do you know of anything besides BootVis to determine where the

No I don't.

Edit boot.ini and add /sos

eg
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=3D"Microsoft Windows XP =
Professional" /fastdetect /SOS

This will list the drivers as they load. It's too fast to read normally =
but if something here is slow it may show.

What's wrong with bootvis.

Thanks David, actually nothing is wrong with BootVis. Maybe I just don't
know exactly how to find where and why the stall occurs with it. The boot
process itself is normal, just when entering a user acct., there is about a
2 minute delay with no disk activity before the 4 systray icons load. I've
tried changing start order to no avail. It hasn't been a major issue for I
seldom ever have to restart XP anyway. I tended to blame it on one of the
windows updates for it happened after one a while back and seen lots of
posts shortly afterward about stalls in booting.

Also Explorer gets confused with FTP. It freezes till the FTP site =
answers, if you have shortcuts on the desktop to ftp sites try hiding =
them. Also non available network stuff.

Close! Thanks to your other tips, I found it: NTBTLOG.TXT.

Brilliant! Frigging brilliant! :) Here's the one mention of it for XP in the
KB:

%SystemRoot%\Debug\UserMode\Userenv.log might shed some light on it. =
Also Explorer gets confused with FTP. It freezes till the FTP site =
answers, if you have shortcuts on the desktop to ftp sites try hiding =
them. Also non available network stuff.

Thanks David, The only shortcuts I have on the desktop are to my drives and

It's just a minor annoyance, but I am of the curious type and like to poke
at these little annoyances at times. I know on occasion I use explorer for
ftp sites and realize it stores that link, but that appears to be clean.

%SystemRoot%\Debug\UserMode\Userenv.log might shed some light on it. =
Also Explorer gets confused with FTP. It freezes till the FTP site =
answers, if you have shortcuts on the desktop to ftp sites try hiding =

Thanks David, The only shortcuts I have on the desktop are to my drives and
the recycle bin. I cleared the log and glanced at the refreshed log but
notice the errors right before the stall point which was 19:01:00.

USERENV(218.21c) 18:59:31:112 MyRegUnLoadKey: Failed to unmount hive
00000005

It's just a minor annoyance, but I am of the curious type and like to poke
at these little annoyances at times. I know on occasion I use explorer for
ftp sites and realize it stores that link, but that appears to be clean.

Thanks David, The only shortcuts I have on the desktop are to my drives and
the recycle bin. I cleared the log and glanced at the refreshed log but
notice the errors right before the stall point which was 19:01:00.

USERENV(218.21c) 18:59:31:112 MyRegUnLoadKey: Failed to unmount hive
00000005
USERENV(218.21c) 18:59:31:112 DumpOpenRegistryHandle: 2 user registry

USERENV(218.21c) 18:59:31:112 UnloadUserProfileP: Didn't unload user profile

USERENV(218.21c) 18:59:46:694 UnloadUserProfile: UnloadUserProfileP failed

USERENV(214.218) 19:00:31:623 CUserProfile::CleanupUserProfile: Ref Count is

It's just a minor annoyance, but I am of the curious type and like to poke
at these little annoyances at times. I know on occasion I use explorer for
ftp sites and realize it stores that link, but that appears to be clean.

Errors are natural and normal. If you want to know if a file exists, one =
opens it. If it doesn't exist an error is raised, the program traps the =
error and decides what to do (create the file, look elsewhere for it, or =
terminate). If the program doesn't trap the error then windows will end =
up with the error (as the error handler of last resort) - as windows =
doesn't know what was in the programmers mind it tends to terminate any =
program raising an error. Programmers tend to only trap expected errors =
(eg File Doesn't Exist) allowing Windows to handle any unexpected error

You can look up Win32 errors by typing
net helpmsg <decimal error number>
Use Calc to convert hex to decimal.

However some return 0 for error and one calls another function for the =
error. You have to look it up. (use in Google, site:microsoft.com =
UnloadUserProfile)

EG
The UnloadUserProfile function unloads a user's profile that was loaded =
by the LoadUserProfile function. The caller must have administrative =
privileges on the computer.=20

BOOL UnloadUserProfile(
HANDLE hToken, // user token
HANDLE hProfile // handle to registry key
);Parameters
hToken=20
[in] Token for the user, returned from the LogonUser, =
CreateRestrictedToken, DuplicateToken, OpenProcessToken, or =
OpenThreadToken function. The token must have TOKEN_IMPERSONATE and =
TOKEN_DUPLICATE access.=20
hProfile=20
[in] Handle to the registry key. This value is the hProfile member of =
the PROFILEINFO structure.=20
Return Values
If the function succeeds, the return value is nonzero.

If the function fails, the return value is zero. To get extended error =
information, call GetLastError.=20

I'll take a wild guess and say look at your services.

This will list the drivers as they load. It's too fast to read normally =

Hi David, do you know of anything besides BootVis to determine where the
delays are? Thanks.

No I don't.

Edit boot.ini and add /sos

eg
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=3D"Microsoft Windows XP =
Professional" /fastdetect /SOS

This will list the drivers as they load. It's too fast to read normally =
but if something here is slow it may show.

%SystemRoot%\Debug\UserMode\Userenv.log might shed some light on it. =

Thanks David, The only shortcuts I have on the desktop are to my drives and
the recycle bin. I cleared the log and glanced at the refreshed log but
notice the errors right before the stall point which was 19:01:00.

It's just a minor annoyance, but I am of the curious type and like to poke
at these little annoyances at times. I know on occasion I use explorer for
ftp sites and realize it stores that link, but that appears to be clean.

up with the error (as the error handler of last resort) - as windows =
doesn't know what was in the programmers mind it tends to terminate any =
program raising an error. Programmers tend to only trap expected errors =
(eg File Doesn't Exist) allowing Windows to handle any unexpected error

You can look up Win32 errors by typing
net helpmsg <decimal error number>
Use Calc to convert hex to decimal.

However some return 0 for error and one calls another function for the =
error. You have to look it up. (use in Google, site:microsoft.com =
UnloadUserProfile)

EG
The UnloadUserProfile function unloads a user's profile that was loaded =
by the LoadUserProfile function. The caller must have administrative =
privileges on the computer.=20

BOOL UnloadUserProfile(
HANDLE hToken, // user token
HANDLE hProfile // handle to registry key
);Parameters
hToken=20
[in] Token for the user, returned from the LogonUser, =
CreateRestrictedToken, DuplicateToken, OpenProcessToken, or =
OpenThreadToken function. The token must have TOKEN_IMPERSONATE and =
TOKEN_DUPLICATE access.=20
hProfile=20
[in] Handle to the registry key. This value is the hProfile member of =
the PROFILEINFO structure.=20
Return Values
If the function succeeds, the return value is nonzero.

If the function fails, the return value is zero. To get extended error =
information, call GetLastError.=20

I'll take a wild guess and say look at your services.

Thanks David, The only shortcuts I have on the desktop are to my drives and

notice the errors right before the stall point which was 19:01:00.

It's just a minor annoyance, but I am of the curious type and like to poke
at these little annoyances at times. I know on occasion I use explorer for
ftp sites and realize it stores that link, but that appears to be clean.

HANDLE hProfile // handle to registry key
);Parameters
hToken=20
[in] Token for the user, returned from the LogonUser, =
CreateRestrictedToken, DuplicateToken, OpenProcessToken, or =
OpenThreadToken function. The token must have TOKEN_IMPERSONATE and =
TOKEN_DUPLICATE access.=20
hProfile=20
[in] Handle to the registry key. This value is the hProfile member of =
the PROFILEINFO structure.=20
Return Values
If the function succeeds, the return value is nonzero.

If the function fails, the return value is zero. To get extended error =
information, call GetLastError.=20

I'll take a wild guess and say look at your services.

HANDLE hProfile // handle to registry key
);Parameters
hToken=20
[in] Token for the user, returned from the LogonUser, =
CreateRestrictedToken, DuplicateToken, OpenProcessToken, or =
OpenThreadToken function. The token must have TOKEN_IMPERSONATE and =
TOKEN_DUPLICATE access.=20
hProfile=20
[in] Handle to the registry key. This value is the hProfile member of =
the PROFILEINFO structure.=20
Return Values
If the function succeeds, the return value is nonzero.

If the function fails, the return value is zero. To get extended error =
information, call GetLastError.=20

I'll take a wild guess and say look at your services.
