View Full Version : Folder names, running tasks, Logon screen, Internet Explorer 6; regestry?

CKR

I just installed deleted some spyware hidden in the
regestry in my computer. Suddenly, I couldn't run any
tasks. I noticed that "My Comuter" and "My Network
Places" were renamed to "Folder. Internet Explorer
opened. The Windows logowas stretched all the way aross
the screen and something was downloading (I don't know
what). I thought re-logging onto my account would solve
the problem. It only made it worse. The logon screen
appeared, but the user acoount names and Shutdown screen
buttons did not show up. I am posting this message from
another computer. Could anyone help me?

Since we don't know what you deleted or if you ran a spyware removal
tool (Spybot Search & Destroy and/or Ad-aware), it's really hard to
tell you. I'd go into Safe Mode (repeatedly tap F8 as the computer is
starting up to get the right menu) and do a System Restore to before
you got happy in the registry. Then download the above-mentioned
programs (www.security.kolla.de and www.lavasoftusa.com), update them,
and run them in Safe Mode. Be sure you have a current (post-2002
version using updated definitions) antivirus installed also.

Spyware does not hide in the registry. References to spyware, yes; but not
the actual files belonging to the spyware. It sounds like you may have
deleted a little too much in the registry and/or there is more at work
(virus possibly). Deleting a reference to a program would not disable the
entire system in the manner you describe. An undetected virus could.

You could try logging on to the built-in Administrator account. If using XP
Pro, press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice at the Welcome screen. This brings up the
default style logon prompt. Type in Administrator as the user name. If XP
was pre-installed, chances are good that there is no password so leave that
field blank.

If using XP Home, boot to Safe Mode. Log on to Administrator.

Once you are logged on you can start your troubleshooting. May want to use
another computer to download AdAware and the most recent reference file so
that you can run it on this disabled system.

From Safe Mode, you could possibly use System Restore to rollback to a date
that precedes the deletions from the registry. May need to create a new
everyday account for yourself if the old accounts are too damaged from the
spyware.

If/when you get back into normal Windows, scan the system with an antivirus
program that has been updated with the current virus definitions. If not
done yes, check the system for spyware/adware as well.

that precedes the deletions from the registry. May need to create a new
everyday account for yourself if the old accounts are too damaged from the
spyware.

If/when you get back into normal Windows, scan the system with an antivirus
program that has been updated with the current virus definitions. If not
done yes, check the system for spyware/adware as well.

Since we don't know what you deleted or if you ran a spyware removal
tool (Spybot Search & Destroy and/or Ad-aware), it's really hard to
tell you. I'd go into Safe Mode (repeatedly tap F8 as the computer is
