View Full Version : Uh oh - removal of 811493 leaves system inoperable

After using Add/Remove Programs to remove the Q811493 patch, my wife's
computer refuses to boot, even from safe mode. Am currently waiting
for my system disks from HP to try booting from the CD.
Just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems or has possible
solutions.
Thanks in advance.

Did you have antivirus installed on the machine when you installed this fix?
You should be able to boot into recovery console and manually uninstall the
fix if you have to, its in C:\winnt\$ntuninstallQ811493$
Copy the kernel back to the system32 and dllcache and then reboot the
machine.
Or a safer way is to boot into safe mode and uninstall it if you can.

Joseph,
Thank you very much for the prompt response. Unfortunately, I did
indeed have Norton AV installed and running when I installed the fix.
I should have specified that I'm running Windows XP Home. Does the
system recovery tool also work for XP? Also, I want to emphasize that
I uninstalled the fix and then the machine wouldn't boot. Will the
system recovery tool also help in this situation?
My apologies in advance if I'm being obtuse.

OK , so the fix is gone and that what lead us to this point? Check for that
uninstall directory in recovery console, its works the same in 2k and XP. I
am wondering if maybe you are just missing a kernel now.
Also, try a boot floppy. Format a floppy in another machine in GUI mode (
dont quick format) and copy NTLDR, ntdetect.com and boot.ini to it and try
to boot your down machine. Make sure those files are all XP files but it
doesnt matter if they are Pro or Home versions.

Joseph,
Yes, I removed the fix with Add/Remove Programs, it prompted me to
reboot, which then failed.
Will try recovery console and/or the boot floppy, as necessary. Again,
thank you very much for your help.
