View Full Version : 32GB limit on my WD 80GB hard-drive
Dominic
December 6th 03, 10:12 PM
Hi guys, I have seen a few postings about this problem but I still
don't understand how to solve it. Please help.
Hard-drive: Western Digital 80GB (Ultra ATA/100)
OS: Windows XP
Motherboard: Asus CUSL2-C
BIOS: cslc1009.awd (Recently downloaded from Asus web-site)
I am trying to install this new hard-drive. When I install XP, it can
only see 32GB, instead of 80GB. I've also tried to install EZ-BIOS
which comes with WD's Data Lifeguard v.10. (Is EZ-BIOS compatible with
XP at all?) It doesn't seem to help.
Any suggestion?
Thanks

You need to format this drive with NTFS file system to get more than 32 GB
partitions if you are using the XP CD to format it. If you want a FAT16
file system, get a windows ME or 98 SE boot disk from bootdisk.com, boot
with that and fdisk and format it to 80 GB from there.

Are you sure your BIOS will handle 80GB? If it does, set your CD drive as
first boot device, boot from the XP CD and do a clean install, partitioning
and formatting with the XP disk.

when you format the disk during the XP install as FAT32 you are limited to 32gb..if you select NTFS you can format the entire 80 gb
....IF you want a >32gb FAT32, boot the pc with a win98se/me dos diskette and use fdisk and format....then do the install from the xp
cdrom...

Any 815 mainboard with the latest BIOS will not have a 32GB limit.
You must have the drive jumpered to 32GB, or some other screw-up.

Ummm....If you're using the XP cd to partition and format the drive and if
you're doing FAT32, you have a 32GB limit. Format it in NTFS. You'll have
better luck

use NTFS, FAT32 has the limitation at 32 mb.

FAT32 has no limitation at 32 mb or GB. It's the tool that comes with
windows that doesn't like to create FAT32 partitions over 32GB. Use a
Win98 boot disk and fdisk will happily create the partition.

Is there a reason why you need FAT32? NTFS is much better is most
situations... Some notable exceptions would be write-compatibility in
Linux.

Eric, thanks for your reply.
I thought it was my old BIOS which caused the limit. That's why I
downloaded the latest BIOS for my motherboard from Asus website a few
days ago. I assumed that this BIOS should break the 32GB limit.
However, when I went to the BIOS hard-drive information section, it
still reported 32GB :-(
I'm not a hardware expert. Could you let me know how I can check if I
have accidentally "jumpered" my drive to 32GB? (I did jumper my drive
for the matter of master-slave thing)
What other things should I check?
Thanks again

Sorry, I should be more specific in my first posting. I have always
been using NTFS.
Furthermore, even before XP formatted my hard-drive, XP reported that
my harddrive had only 32GB.

Nope, that particularly motherboard is much too recent for that.

You cant have with that particular drive.

I'd scrub the drive completely with something like clearhdd from
http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/utilities/clearhdd.htm
Partition and format the drive again and see if that fixes it.
There is some geometry information in the first physical
sector of the drive and that could well be the problem.

OK, forget about xp, what size does your bios say your hard drive is when

Hello Dominic, The first thing you want to do is to go to the Motherboard
web page and see if it supports an 80 gb drive. Some Motherboards DO NOT!!!
Then, go to the Western Digital site and download and print out the install
instructions and also get the WD format & partition utilities. Read the
instructions and follow them!!!!!

Horrible advice. Any mainboard with UDMA-100 will support over 32GB. Never run
the manufacturer's drive preparation software.

Are you using the latest FDISK, I had a similar problem where the bios
would see 80g but f disk would only see 32g when I was partionioning
the drive into 2 partitionss. If you partition by % with the old FDISK
that should work OK. See if that is any help. What does the bios say
when you are booting up. Does that give the full size. John

You've mangled that completely. The older fdisk
doesnt just see 32GB, it shows the size over 64GB.

I must disagree, when I tried it I could not partition more than a

You must have confused yourself. That >64GB
effect is very well documented, even by MS.
Most likely you were looking at a drive that had 32GB geometry
details in the MBR and thats why fdisk showed only 32GB.

Which may actually have left that drive in 32GB capacity in the first
place (using SET MAX command). IIRC, that has happened before.
He could try IBM/HGST's Feature Tool to see if that's the case.
