Steven,
Further to my posting about this, here is an update:
I changed the boot priority in BIOS last night to CD ROM first and then
booted up. It came up boot from CD but didn't give an option to reply yes
or no. After about 5 seconds the option for boot safe mode, Last Known Good
etc came up and no matter which one I select it briefly Blue Screens and
reboots. The CD does spin up as well when it comes up with boot from CD ROM
option. I swapped the jumpers on my CD and HDD to make the CD master and
HDD slave, but this didn't make a difference. I even tried booting from the
XP Pro Boot Disk but this wouldn't work either.
Have I got to format my HDD for this?

Hello
What was the original problem or issue and are you in the process
of reloading windows or what is the main issue

Hi,
Reconnect your hard disk as master on the primary IDE
channel and the CD rom as master on the Secondary IDE
channel. Make sure the jumper are set correctly.
Please follow the following steps to perform a Repair
install of XP Home/Pro:
1. Backup your important data files for just in case
the repair install failed.
2. Start the computer and press the "DELETE" key or
other function key as displayed on the screen to enter
BIOS setup, click the BOOT tab and change the boot
sequence to 1st boot floppy, 2nd boot CD-Rom and 3rd boot
hard disk (press the "+" or "-" key next to the numerical
keys to change the boot sequence).
3. Insert the XP CD into the CD-Rom then press "F10"
key to save and exit BIOS setup.
4. When the display showed "Press any key to boot
from CD" appeared at the bottom line, press the "Space
bar" to enter Setup. Or you can just press the Space bar
continuously to enter the Setup. If you missed the chance
to enter setup, press "Clt+Alt+Del" keys to reboot.
5. XP started to load data and the Setup screen
displayed. Press the "ENTER" key to select setup.
6. Press the "F8" key to accept the licensing
agreement and press the "R" key to choose the option for a
repair install
7. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the
installation.
After installation completed, update the downloaded
drivers of all the hard wares and peripherals.
Go to Device Manager to check and ensure all drivers have
installed properly.
Make sure your computer and peripherals (printer, modem,
scanner, digital camera, etc.) are working fine before
downloading SP1.
Procedures for download SP1:
1. Run "CHKDSK", run "Disk clean-up" and then
run "Defrag"
2. Run "MSCONFIG" and then click the "Start Up" tab.
Uncheck all the boxes and write down the list for
reference.
3. Reboot and log in as Administrator
4. Disable the Anti-Virus software.
5. Download SP1 using broadband modem (must not use
56K modem as it takes too long time for downloading and
disconnection during download would cause serious
problems). If you do not have DSL modem, I would prefer
you to buy a SP1 CD.
6. During the download of SP1, don't touch any key
unless you are instructed to do so. You can select the
option to remove or not to remove SP1 in future at your
discretion.
7. After download completed, press the confirm and
reboot button as displayed on the screen.
8. After reboot, right click "My Computer" and
select "Property". You would see the Windows Version and
Service Pack 1 at the right hand side next to the Windows
logo if SP1 installed properly.
9. Run "MSCONFIG" again and recheck all the boxes and
then run "Defrag".
10. Perform Windows Update again to download other
patches.
