There might be another way. I installed XP prof and all my programs
disappeared. I had made a backup of my entire c: drive onto another logical
(having been in this boat before). I had to manually reinstall the start
items one-by-one. Windows doesn't do this. Also I ran my programs from
windows explorer, and of course, all the .dll files were missing from
windows/system and system32. So I simply copied them over from the spare
windows directory.

Slow and cumbersome but it's the only way to go if you don't have or don't
want to reinstall the programs.

I hate this part of upgrading.
