I believe you are referring to this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Control\SessionManager\MemoryManagement\SecondLeve lDataCac

It is unlikely with your newer motherboard/chipset that
Windows has failed to detect your L2 cache correctly.
Despite the fact that the value in your registry may
show "0" Windows XP is benefiting from your 512K L2
cache. Microsoft only recommends modifying this for
those who may still be using PII or ealier.
