I used to be able to simply double click a .wav file in
WinXP and have the file played. Now, it wants to open up
Windows Media Player before it will play the play the
file. If I change the association to Winamp, it still
wants to open up the app before playing the file. What
have I done? I think there used to be a small program
(Win98) that would just play the .wav file. I don't know
if I had that running or WinXP would just play the file
without opening up an app & I screwed it up. Any ideas?

Mplayer2 is the older version of the player. Try setting it as your default
..wav player and see if that helps.

Microsoft "improved" the system which bugs the *&^% out of me too. Even
using the old player it now still insists on popping up a window on screen -
albeit the old Media Player window which at least is faster than the new one,
and it then at least can be told to close again automatically.
All one wants sometimes is to play a short alarm sound!!
