the icon names on my desktop have been changed to
numbers. How did this happen and what is the best way to
change them back?

Hi Vanna,
Change the icon font -control panel/display/appearance/advanced, select icon
from the menu and change the font (the default is MS Sans Sarif.

Actually in XP the default is Tahoma but MS SanSerif will work too.
