What is virtual memory?

I know what virtual memory does.
But, Do I need that one in my system?
My computer's memory is 1 GB, but when I launch photoshop 7.0, it suggest I
should set at leat 1600MB virtual memory. Is it insufficient? It also said
that without virtual memory, your system would be dangerous.

I dislike OS's using memory as hard disk drive. It let it down system's
performance.

Do I have to purchase more memory for my system?

Having 1gig of memory is plenty good and with that, the page file (which =
is the part you are referring to here) probably would not come into any =
use, unless you are doing some serious graphics jobs with Photoshop. =
Your Virtual Memory should just be fine as XP does good job using all =
memory efficiently, and I would never ever recommend turning off the =
page file.

The culprit in your case is Photoshop, and they (Adobe) need to address =
this, but I tell you how to remedy this;

Open Photoshop, click on "Edit", then scroll down to "Preferences", then =
over to "Memory and Image Cache". In the "Memory Usage" section change =
what Photoshop uses upon launching to 5% (which is great for the memory =
you say you have). I set mine at 10% as I have 512megs of memory. This =
should solve your problem.

Some programs like to have virtual memory available or they don't run right.
More memory isn't a bad thing, if you actually need more, but sometimes it's
just best to have some virtual memory set up in case you need it.
