Spent way too much time looking for a possible solution
for installing a scanner on windows xp(home edition). I
have a 'magic keys'(I believe the manufacturer is pacific
image) model 1236c. Does windows xp only support wia
drivers? My scanner has twain. Microsoft support has
pacific image listed as being compatible but it's listed
as "multiple frames film scanner-36 series". I was just
wondering if there's anyway to use the scanner that I
have by installing a driver that will support it. Anyone
have an answer can post and/or e-mail me. thanks.

You need to be exactly correct in your description. What
connection, parallel or USB?
Since you can buy a brand new HP that has XP drivers for
less than $75 and other brands are less than $50, it isn't
worth much time wasted looking for drivers for an old, slow
scanner. New scanners have much higher resolution, better
color and generally are worth the upgrade.
Get you exact model and do a search on Google for drivers.

Bill,
Yes, all scanners require appropriate drivers to work with any particular
OS.
Creation and testing of these drivers are the responsibility of the scanner
mfr and thus, the best place to look for them is the mfr's Website.
Substituting other drivers will not usually work.

Twain is a standard interface between drivers and applications. If your
scanner is a parallel port one, then there may well be no drivers
available - older ones probably use techniques left over from win 3.11
that are quite unacceptable to XP, and makers have moved so much to
using USB fro scanners that they are not writing new drivers for such
'obsolete' devices
