I have a problem on a friend's computer. It gives an error: services.exe and then it restarts. I tried all kinds of things but it keeps coming up after a while. I did a complete reinstall and even this won't help. After a couple of days it starts all over.
What can I do to fix this problem?

Thanks.

Reinstalling Windows should not be the first troubleshooting tool you
use! It sounds very much like your friend has picked up a trojan or
some other malware. Scan with a current (post-2002 version using
updated definitions) antivirus. Also remove spyware with Spybot Search
& Destroy from www.security.kolla.de and Ad-aware from
www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs before running
them. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe
Mode.

If your av and spyware removal tools were updated and run in Safe Mode
and therefore you're quite sure the computer is clean, perhaps there is
a damaged file. What changed between the time things worked and the
time they didn't? Is there a cause-and-effect you can identify? You
might try running the System File Checker. Go to Start>Run and type
"sfc /scannow" without the quotes. Note that there is a space between
"sfc" and "/scannow". If that doesn't work, perhaps it's a hardware
issue, like the machine is overheating. I hope this gives you a few
more suggestions to work with. Of course, your friend could always
decide to take the machine to a good local repair shop (not a BestBuy
or CompUSA type of store), but if you think it will be helpful, please
do repost.

Cheers,
