View Full Version : How do I get xp to detect the onboard modem

We have a pcchips motherboard (model 754) with an onboard modem (CMI8738
whatever model this is). Windows SP pro sp1 is installed and working ok.
Everything else is installed and working.

(Just to be clear - this is an onboard modem and NOT an internal modem card)

Previously the computer had winme on it and everything worked with no
problems including the onboard modem.

XP does not recognise the onboard modem - the modem is set on in the bios
and worked previously with ME

I have downloaded the latest drivers from the mainboard manufacturer for the
motherboard.

When I right click on the inf file and install it nothing happens. There is
no setup program like for 98 or me.

When I goto modems - add modem - tell it I have the disk and point it to the
location of the inf file, then it goes back to the select modem / inf file
location without listing any modems - loop :(

How do I get the damn onboard modem recognised and working in xp please

Device manager also does not show any modem as being installed or having the
wrong driver, in device manager the modem selection is not there at all.

At this stage it not a matter of selecting the right modem but to get the
operation system to recognise that a modem is installed.

Thanks in advance for any assistance
Thanks
Mark

HSP56 MicroModem PCTEL HSP56 MR (modem driver CMI8738 [7.64-pcc-06] or
HSP56XP2052)

Also have this modem in a TINY PC.Anyone tried these XP drivers at all?.I
would love to put XP in on my system but have had a hell of a time getting
this bloody modem to work. It works fine upto Windows ME and thats it.

It seems that this modem is a PC-Chips':

Have you tried going to http://www.pcchips.com.tw/driver.html and downloading the WinXP driver ver 8.00 build 0031? The drivers you
listed are for Win9x or NT.

to, do they provide drivers for your modem for XP, once you have

Did you uninstall the Win9X version of the driver? I would then reboot and see if XP detects the modem, after that point to the
unzipped WinXP inf file.

Open Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager and look for
an entry for any sort of Modem or for an entry in the "Other Devices"
category for a "PCI communications device". If any such entries are
present uninstall them. Then shut down and restart the computer and
when it detects the hardware again direct it to the modem driver that
you downloaded.

If this does not work or if there is no such device listed in Device
Manager then try booting the computer in Safe Mode and check Device
Manager from there. To start Windows XP in Safe Mode turn it on and
press the F8 key when the black screen flashes briefly just before the
first Windows XP startup screen appears.

Good luck
