Attachments

In outlook express when I try to open attachments they open in microsoft word but are made up of letters and symbols and are unreadable, the header says file conversion. What have I done and how do I fix it ? in simple terms for a novice please.

What are the extensions of these attachments--the last three
characters of their filenames?
