View Full Version : Running MS Dos from XP Pro

I recently upgraded from 98 to XP Pro. I was able to
restart my machine as MS-Dos under 98. I have some old
user written programs that I could only run under MS-Dos.
Is it possible to bring the machine up as a MS-Dos Machine
under XP? If so, How? Thank You

No. WindowsXP does not run "on top of" DOS, like Win98 did. You might try
running your program in DOS Compatibility Mode by right clicking the
executable file and choosing properties.

No. Unlike Windows 98, Windows XP is not built on DOS, and it
isn't possible to do what you want. You can think of that as a
disadvantage if you want, but be aware that most of XP's much
greater stability is *because* it isn't built on DOS.

The only way to boot to DOS is to boot from a DOS diskette (or to
dual-boot to DOS).

But be aware that if you do that and your drive is FAT32, it
won't be seen from a DOS boot, unless you run special software
like NTFSDOS.

No, XP does not have a true DOS mode. But it does have a command
window, and it's likely, although not certain, that you can get your DOS
programs to run in that Window. Under start / programs / accessories
you will find "command prompt". The compatability of this is very good
(and it can be "tuned" to make it better), but it's not perfect.

Actually, if they drive is FAT32, they CAN see it from DOS. I think
you meant that if the drive is formatted in NTFS, it won't be seen
from a DOS boot!

Ugh! You are right, of course. Sorry, especially to the original
poster, for the slip of the brain.
