How do I get auto updates to work again ??

It depends; specifically what problems are you having? Try going to Control
Panel and clicking on Automatic Updates; if everything is greyed out, then
you'll need to go start the service by going to Administrative Tools >
Services in the Control Panel. Look for the Automatic Updates service, and
check to see if it is running. If not, double-click the service and click
the Start button. At this point, go back to the Automatic Updates Control
Panel option... things should no longer be greyed out. Select your desired
settings, click OK, and voila.
