I have a new Maxtor 120gig and I have it divided into an
80gig and a 40gig partition. I want to format the 80gig as
FAT32, but XP only gives me the NFTS option.

Any ideas on how to get around this?

Format it NTFS! Here's why:

NTFS Preinstallation and Windows XP

Benchmarking on Windows XP

A couple of different ways,

1. Reduce the size of the 80 gb into smaller partitions.
2. Obtain a copy of Partition Magic or BootIT NG.

It's going to be a shared data drive for XP and Mandrake
Linux, so it has to be FAT32. Thanks for those links though.

Hi, Aidan - and Jerry.

....or boot from a Win9x/ME floppy boot disk and run Format.exe.

Microsoft limits Win2K/XP's ability to format FAT32 to 32 GB. However,
Win9x/ME can format FAT32 volumes as large as ~127 GB. After formatting -
by Win9x/ME or some other OS - WinXP will happily use the whole 40 or 80 GB
FAT32 volume.

For details, see the free online version of the WinXP Pro Resource Kit,
starting with this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/TechNet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/prkc_fil_tdrn.asp

Win98's maximum format ability is documented in the Win2K Pro RK:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/default.asp?url=/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/prork/prdf_fls_pxjh.asp
