My hp 712 worked fine under 98 but keeps giving me errors
in xp. My sis's computer is also running xp and my 712
works under it just fine, with same cord and xp driver. I
have tried several drivers and reseting the bios. I
cannot afford new printer.
any help please?

Sometimes installing deskjets can be a real pain. In my experience if you
are having problems you must first remove all entries for the deskjet from
the Registry. Usually if you search the registry for Hewlett Packard you
will find the entries, then delete them. Your first attempt to remove the
drivers should be by using the delete function through Control panel but
sometimes this does not do a thorough enough job.
If the drivers for your deskjet are native to WinXP when you reboot with
the printer connected, the XP drivers will automatically install (do with my
930C). If you want the updated drivers disconnect the printer and download
them from the HP web site and be sure to follow the install instructions,
that is don't reconnect the printer until told to. You will then have two
printer drivers, the XP one plus the more recent. Set the recent driver to
be the default. I found no way to remove the WinXP driver (again for the
930C) as XP simply reinstals it.
Hope this helps.
