I need help! I have a functional hp 712c. It works under win98 and under
winxp on my sister's gateway. I have a dell that I upgraded to xp. All of
the drivers available are useless. I reset the bios to what one site said,
ECP not bi-directional. Everytime I print it says failed to print even
though it is installed correctly. XP recognizes the printer as being there
but not even a test page will print.

Windows XP has built-in drivers for your printer, remove your printer from
"Printer and Faxes"
and reboot and let Windows XP find your printer, make sure you pick the
right HP printer when it boot's back up and then go to the Control
Panel/Device Manager:
Windows XP Printer Error, HP And Others
Open the Device Manager and click the + sign next to Ports (COM & LPT).
Select the printer port, e.g. ECP Printer Port (LPT1).
Port Settings tab check the 'Enable legacy Plug and Play detection'
This may or may not help.

A scanner really should be bi-directional and try all of the
enhanced modes in the BIOS and in device manager, too.
(make them match)

LOL, I was tired and had just been reading about somebody's
scanner problem. But even printers run better
bi-directional.

I believe with the combination of Dell, 712, and Xp, you need the BIOS
set to EPP for parallel port. This is going a ways back in my memory,
but I had the same thing with my Dell and HP 722 (same as 712). Once I
switched to EPP, printer worked find with built in XP drivers. I went to
Dell's Support Forum and EPP was mentioned in a couple of posts about
the 712.
