Installing Programs

I am running WinXP and the oddest thing is happening with programs I am
trying to install from CDs. It will take me thru the first things i.e.
where I want the program, etc., but when it gets to the installing part, it
just sits there. If I am patient and leave it alone, it eventually will
install (I'm talking at least 15 minutes later). Has anyone ever heard of
this before? Thanks.

I've run into the same problem, both with installing XP pro itself and Office2003. I tried the following:

1) updated BIOS
2) updated CD drivers
3) GOT A NEW CD-Rom

None of these worked for me, but might be useful for you. Ultimately, my problem was that the install program did not like my hard drive settings - I had them set as Master/Slave rather than Cable Select. When I changed the seetings to CS, things ran fine. I don't understand why that would have been a problem, but just passing on what happened to me

Hello Joyce,
It all depends on the "compatibility" & age of your programs. What are =
these programs? Who are the publishers (makers)?

"Well written" & well behaved programs are what we should all be =
demanding.

Hi Joyce,

Try cleaning up the installer.

Start/run services.msc, scroll down to "Windows Installer" and double click
it. Stop the service if it is running, set the startup type line to
disabled. Click apply/ok and reboot.

Delete the contents of the temp folders, there may be a file in there
interfering with the setup routine of the installer. Get both:

C:\Windows\temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\local settings\temp

Now reverse the first set of steps and reenable the Windows Installer (You
can just set the startup type to manual). Reboot.

Turn off all other running programs, especially your antivirus software. Use
ctrl+shift+escape, if necessary, to "end task" on everything. Then try
installing something.

Thanks for replying. One I tried is Calendar Creator by Broderbund, 2002
program, Version 9 for Windows 98/2000/Me/XP, and NT4...... it took at least
15 to install. Was having trouble installing Windows Updates as well, but
support helped me out there. So somehow I can't believe its the programs,
but some glitch in my computer. Thanks again.

Because a true Cable Select ribbon cable is terminated internally on one
wire/pin, which evidently is what you have. Not all are the same and not
externally visible by inspection for a clue. The former ide type ribbon
cable can operate in either fashion without protest.

I did all these things. Tried installing PSP7 and thought it was going to
work fine, but it stopped 2/3 of the way then quit. It's almost as if the
DVD player goes to sleep for a few minutes. Finished installing about 15
later. Lil' Dave, read your response but that is way over my computer
illiterate head. Thanks anyway, for your help.
