Bought a new book yesterday. Windows Xp for dummies. The
authors web site is;
www.woodyswatch.com
After looking through it for messenger service in
archives i found this. to stop, i believe these messages.

Click Start | Run, type services.msc and hit Enter.
Right-click on Messenger and pick Properties
Click Stop
In the Start-up type box pick Manual
Click OK all the way out

It may work as i've no more as yet, but only time will
tell.

as detailed previously in this NG the preferred method of stopping messenger
service pop-ups is to either install or properly enable a firewall. The
method you suggest prevents the symptom of an open port but does not address
the security issues.
