I upgraded from Me to XP (home version),my Sony digital
camera and Archos MP3 player which were recognized in Me
and worked well, do not show up as drives in XP
within "my computer" even though in both cases the device
manager does pick up the devices as operating properly
and the connection shows on the task bar.
I suspect some Me legacy files are blocking these devices
from working properly.

Just a guess, but I've noted that USB devices do not install reliably unless
drivers are installed BEFORE physical installation of the USB device.
Everything else can look fine, but the darn thing just won't work or
otherwise be recognized. I suggest uninstalling the USB drivers, removing
the hardware, reinstalling the USB drivers FIRST, then reinstalling the
hardware. Works wonders.

But, i can't imagine how to do that when the USB2 drivers are part and
parcel within SP1 from Microsoft(?) Have gotten the message popup that sez a
high speed usb2 device is not connected to high speed ports (they are).
Which tells me XP sees the ports; sees the USB2 hardware that is attached,
but still insists they are NOT attached to those ports..
All 3rd party drivers are kicked-out by XP... I am certainly NOT gonna try
and uninstall SP1, so i am still stuck, alaong with this other person,
although your suggestion makes complete sense based on what i was told about
doing it the way you describe, from the start..

Found the solution..
Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer
Management/Disk Management.

Which allows you to see all the drives and reassign a
disk letter to it so it is seen.

In my case, I had assigned letter F as a Mapped network
drive (which XP carried over) and XP was trying to use
that letter for the new hardware. I changed the mapped
drive to "Z". Now all is good with my computer
