View Full Version : Killing Pop-up Windows Messages

how to get rid of those pesky SPAM-type messages that pop-up through the
Windows Messenger Service. These messages appear for those of you who use
Win98/NT/2k/XP operating systems. Please keep in mind though, Windows
Messenger Service is not the same as MSN Messenger, or Internet Explorer for
that matter. Windows Messenger Service is built into the operating system
and it was intended to allow network admin's talk to the other users on the
network.
To actually send a 'Windows Messenger Service' message users need to open up
DOS and type "net send", the IP address where the message should be sent to,
and the message itself. For example; typing "net send 192.168.1.6 My
Computer is the fastest!" would send the message "My computer is the
fastest!" to the computer on IP address 192.168.1.6

Anyway, getting back to those spam messages; luckily this is one of the
easier things to disable. First make sure the account you're logged in with
has Administrative access. Then go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools >
Services. From there scroll down to the 'Messenger Service' and disable by
changing 'Startup Type' to 'Disabled,' then exit. After that's done you'll
no longer get those pesky Windows Messenger pop ups!

Open Help and Support and search for "firewall". This will tell you how to
enable XP's built in firewall. If you have a valid reason not to use a
firewall, click Start, Run and enter SERVICES.MSC Locate the Messenger
entry and double click it. Set it to Stopped and Disabled.

However, the reason they can get to the Messenger Service (not to be
confused with Windows Messenger) in the first place, is that your internet
connection is not secure.

Greetings --

This a type of spam has become quite common over the past few
months, and unintentionally serves as a valid security "alert." It
demonstrates that you haven't been taking sufficient precautions while
connected to the Internet. Your data probably hasn't been compromised
by these specific advertisements, but if you're open to this exploit,
you may well be open to other threats. Install and use a decent,
properly configured firewall. (Disabling the messenger service, as
some people recommend, only hides the symptom, and does nothing to
secure your machine.) And ignoring or just "putting up with" these
messages and the problem they represent is particularly foolish.

I wonder what microsoft will do about this problem in longhorn because the
simple home user or computer illiterate person may not know about the
information resources avaliable to help them get rid of such problems.

I should point out that a computer illiterate / learner would not know of
such things as newsgroups.

Hi Ray,

Actually, if you open Help & Support, you will find one of the options =
is to ask for assistance in a public newsgroup. Microsoft has begun to =
understand (albeit slowly) the full value of peer-to-peer support. I =
suspect you will see more of this.

So... I have a router for my dsl connection with 2 computers on it one is
running Win98SE and the other XP Home Edition. I have the messenger service
disabled right now. I just got the router and learned a whole bunch about
network security - but not enuff...

My router has a couple of default rules in its firewall but it looks like it
is blocking incoming IP(0) 'messages'. KB article 330904 says to "...
configure the connection sharing device to block inbound NetBIOS and UDP
broadcast traffic".

What is 'broadcast traffic? My Router has three 'protocol' options for its
rules - TCP, UDP and ICMP. Any guess whcich would be used to block the
NetBIOS traffic?

Thnx,
Bill Wallace
