I have the same problem. That's why I am on here - to try
to find a solution. I am using XP Home Edition. This
just started several weeks ago. The only thing new was
that I downloaded and installed "critical" updates by
Microsoft. I just wish I could figure out which ones they
were and how to remove them. My system has gotten MUCH
slower to respond since then, too. Often times, I am
able to hit Control/Alt/Delete and the screen will come
up telling me the program is not responding. Just about
the same time that screen comes up, it will change and
say the program is running, and the program will be ok.
Other times, however, it totally freezes and I cannot do
anything with the Control/Alt/Delete, nor can I turn the
computer off at the front of the computer - I have it
turn it off at the surge protector power switch. It is
SOOOOO frustrating! I REALLY need help here!!!

Joyce,

click on Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs/
scroll down the list and find Hotfix 811493/click it/Click
on Add/Remove Button/click Yes or OK/Reboot.

This is a well known and documented problem on the
ms website.
