View Full Version : Registry Search

In order to remove the unnecessarily restrictive program BootMagic,
and since they have no respectable 'Uninstall', I have received their
instructions which ask me to 'do a global search in Registry for
the product GUID starting with My Computer.....' and so on.
I'm familiar with getting to Run>>regedit>> and the various HKEY
categories. I went through looking for specific items when
I had to uninstall Nortob System Works 2002.
But doing 'a global search' could be an arduous manual task. Are there
any hints for how to search any way other than manually, line by line?

Thank you.

Bill,

Here are a couple of places to check without doing a through global.... You
should remove the CLSID/GUID and Approved extensions, etc. However, it
isn't detrimental. For that you will have to do a find, unless you already
know the unique ID.

Check to see if the software/program is listed here: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

Other checkpoints for complete removal:

1. Right click the Program's shortcut/Properties to gain the Target Path.

2. Go to Start/Run/Msconfig/Startup and make sure it is not listed or
checked there. If so, uncheck it and remove the program listing by running
this script:

Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup (Line 148)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

This removes the programs in question, the run keys and the icons from the
Notification Area.

3. Go to Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types. If the program
file type is listed, either use Change or Delete.

4. Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications. If the program is listed, right click,
delete.

5. Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to these keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE.

If the program is listed, right click, delete.

6. Go to Start/Run/Regedit. Edit/Find and under Find What type in the
program path gained from step one. From there either use Find next or F3.

7. Removing Invalid Entries in the Add/Remove Programs Tool
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall
