View Full Version : NVIDIA driver software

I am running XP Pro and my Display Adapter is NVIDIA GeForce MX440. The
driver supplied with my system is version 2.9.5.8. It appears to be
'signed' (Microsoft certified) but is also out of date. The NVIDIA website
offers a freed download of Detonator FX version 44.03 driver and states that
this is designed for XP and is 'WHQL Certified' (whatever that means).
However in the process of installing this new driver, I was warned by the
installation wizard that the software was not 'signed' and advised not to
proceed with the installation. I proceeded anyway and the driver software
was downloaded in a new file on my C: drive.
However according to the information in Device Manager, the original driver
software remains installed, not the new driver. This is so even after
restarting the computer.
My attempt to install from the new driver file through 'Update Driver'
failed.
I am keen to run the driver recommended by the manufacturer of the hardware,
but I am also wary of causing more problems in the operation of XP (having
recently suffered almost daily 'blue screens of death').
Any thoughts on which way I should go, instal the driver or not? If so, how
do I complete the installation?

First the driver is WHQL certified for " 44.03 is WHQL Certified for the =
GeForce FX family of GPUs". The version you need is 43.51 available =
here; http://www.evga.com/support/downloads/default.asp.
After the file is downloaded double click on it to install the drivers.

WHQL = Windows Hardware Quality labs certified means signed drivers.
Someone mentioned that the nVidia small print says that driver is signed
for the FX cards only!

I always uninstall existing nVidia drivers & s/w then reboot to XP's
default one (VGA - yuk), then install the new nVidia one. This resets my
monitor driver unfortunately, so I reinstall that as well! Tedious but
generally foolproof unless the newer driver is naff & you have to go
back to the previous one!

It should have been unzipped into C:\NVIDIA, pop over there and run the
setup app from within.
I uninstalled mine due to DX9 help indicating an unsigned driver, didn't
fancy any future conflicts!, I've still got 30.82 installed, all WHQL and
signed.
