I use dial-up. How can Download Accelrator Plus speed up downloads when they
have to send banner advertisements through the free version? Doesn't that
advertsing traffic slow transfer of the thing I really want to download?

It's BS. A dialup connection will not be able to go any faster than the fcc
has regulated for it. Thus, if you're able to get 54k on your system, it
doesn't matter what tweaks to the registry, what apps from the 'net you
install, or how big a hammer you have to beat on your system with...you won't
get any better. DAP has been around for years and has been BS'ing people all
that time, simply because most users don't *know* if there system has sped up
or not, but want it to so bad, that they'll *think* it has.
And yes, your theory about the ads is correct. You're just going to have to
stick with what dialup gives you until you can afford cable/dsl or it gets out
to where you are, or whatever the case may be for you (I know, it sucks...I've
got a few customers who really shouldn't have a computer at all, and have
cable, and it makes me sick to go over there all the time to fix something on
their system and see that damn cable modem sitting there).

Hi Josh,

Garbage - do not install or use it. The only useful utility would be a =
download manager that can be used to reconnect to interupted downloads =
and schedule them for non-use times. These things cannot speed up your =
connection.

DAP can make things faster with its segmented download feature. However,
that only applies if a single download connection does not use up all your
available download bandwidth. For example, if the download speed for each
connection has been limited to 10 kb/s, by opening multiple connections (for
example 8 of them), the aggregate speed can max out at 80 kb/s. (note that
was an exaggerated example). Note that a web server has to support this
segmented downloading feature (ie it supports resumbable downloads via http
or possibly ftp) and multiple connections are allowed.

I doubt that feature would help a dialup user very much as one download
connection would probably use up all your download bandwidth. In this case,
the additional downloading of ads would slow you down.

Sometimes your internet connection is slowed down by causes such as the data
having to be relayed through a path of servers and even some servers have
limited speed.

DAP uses a method of splitting the file into 4 parts and downloading each
part at the same time. If your download was being slowed down by the server,
think about this. You are downloading through IE with just one standard
download at a time. The server will see you as eg. 1 of 500
people/connections. Now look if we use DAP, we have 4 seperate connections.
Thats 4 of 504 people/connections. The server will divide each connection up
into equal shares. If we look at this as shares/fractions we see that 1/500
is smaller than 4/504. If we were the person with the 4/504 share then we
would have greater bandwidth avaliable over the rest who happen to be using
the standard ie downloader (1/500). We get the 500 number representing an
example of 500 people or connections downloading off of this server.
This theory does not work in my expierence on anything less than a 56k
modem.

Thats the way DAP advertises itself as a workaround to bandwidth shares on a
server to increase your download speed. As for the adverts, most of them
advertise for you to purchase DAP, which these adverts come with and are
installed with the original program. They are later updated when your
internet connection is idle and are displayed when you are downloading. Also
note that these adverts are only 15kb gif images, probably less and will not
even take 2 seconds to download, a minor inconvienence to the user.
