View Full Version : Power Supply Insufficient?

Greetings my Freinds,
I am hoping that some clever type person out there
can offer me some advice about a problem on my poor
crippled computer.
I have recently purchased a new stick of memory for
my computer, a 512mb stick of pc133 sdram. Since plugging
this in to my third memory slot (the first 2 being
occupied by 2 128mb pc133 sticks) my computer has taken
to either reseting itself, locking up on random
occasions or when running 3d games (Warcraft 3, Medal of
Honour, etc) quitting back to windows or occasionally
reseting.
However, when I tried unplugging a few components
(Floppy Disc Drive, Scanner, Printer) it seemed to work
fine in the 3d Games and to crash less in general,
however it still boes crash on a semi-regular basis )
either lockups or reseting itself). This seems to make me
think that the problem is caused by an insufficient power
supply. I only have a 300 watt power supply in my system
(a system description is at the bottom of this post).
Could anybody offer any advice on whether lack of
power seems like a sensible diagnosis, or whether it is
likely to be something else?
Apolologies for the long post.
System Specs:
- Epox kta3a MOBO with Duron 800mhz
- 128 + 128 + 512 mb of pc133 sdram
- Seagate 20Gb and Maxtor 60Gb Harddrives.
- Xabre 80 AGP graphics card running a Hiahatchi 21"
monitor
- Savage3 S4 Pro Pci graphics card running an EIZO 17"
monitor
- Realtek NIC running a 10baset network and connecting to
the internet via internet sharing.
- Apple DVD-Ram Drive
- CD-RW

Remove the new memory and observe the results.

Hi
Re-position your RAM sticks so that the 512mb stick is in the first slot.
Check that the computer boots successfully with just that stick in, and then
place the other 2 sticks one at a time in the remaining slots. You may want
to check the system is stable after inserting the first of the 128mb sticks
with the 512mb.
Hope that helps
Pete

Try downloading Memtest86 from http://www.memtest86.com/#download0
Any failures indicate bad memory or too agressive timings.

Agree w/ current suggestions, although considering your concern over the
PSU, it would have been useful to have the specs! Is it a top quality
brand, like Antec TruePower or SmartPower, Enermax, etc., or some generic
that came w/ your case? If the latter, I'd check out the watts (sustained
vs. peak power particularly), amps per rail, etc., on the label, lots of
bad/under-powered PSUs out there.

If I am not too late, I can offer you another possible cause. Some
motherboard may not like to have all the RAM slots filled in with RAM. Thsi
is dependant to the type of chipset set and revision version. Also, not all
the motherbaord of the same model can/will cause this problem.
