I have windows 98 and I want to upgrade to windows xp home
version. I would like to know if I have to buy the full
version or if I can buy just the upgrade version of
windows xp?

Renea;
Both the full and upgrade can each perform a Clean or Upgrade
Installation.
You will save about $100 buying the upgrade so you can us the upgrade
version.

You can buy just the upgrade. The only problem is what
media you have from the previously installed W98. If you
have the proper W98 CD you can do either an upgrade or a
"clean" install. If you don't have a CD that Windows can
recognize, you'll have to install W98 followed by XP (if the
hard drive crashes and must be reformatted or replaced. With
a proper CD you can just put the CD in the drive as proof
when prompted.)

One advantage of buying a full retail CD is that you can
move it to a new computer as you upgrade or build a new
computer. You can also do that with the upgrade CD, but you
are not supposed to do that unless the W98 was also a retail
purchase and not OEM.

With an upgrade you are expected to retain the prior OS.

Either one. Just depends on how you want to operate. If you want to use
NTFS file format you will have to overwrite your Win98 files, but if not you
can use both systems on dual boot up and use the upgrade which is cheaper.
The only problem is if you want to do a complete install later you will have
to install 98.. If money is not an object and you want to strart with a
clean install and reinstall your hardware then the full upgrade is a lot
cleaner.

This is not all correct. The upgrade version will do the exact same clean
install as a full version. 98 does not have to be installed to do a clean
install. XP Setup will ask for the 98 disk to be inserted as verification of
a qualifying previous Windows OS.
Buy the Upgrade.
