View Full Version : How to determine if I have USB 1.1 or 2.0?

How do I determine if my computer has USB 1.1 or 2? The particular model is
not made any more (Compaq 5310US), so I can't find any informatino on it. I
need to know because I am thinking of buying the Sony DRX-500 ULX external
DVD burner, which requires USB 2.0. If this is the wrong new group, someone
please point me to the correct new group. Thanks!

Check the documentation of your computers motherboard if its got built on
USB ports or the USB expansion card, whichever applies to you.

Device Manager will show a listing under USB controllers that mentions USB2.
To open Device Manager, click Start> Run and type devmgmt.msc into the text
box. Click OK.

Sharon, does your device manager on your computer mention USB2? Mine
doesn't. I have two USB2 ports but there is nothing that distinguishes them
from my 6 USB1 ports in the device manager. I have used the USB2 drivers
that come with my Asus motherboard disk and I have used the USB2 drivers
that are on the MS update website.

Rather than stating "usb2", mine lists the usb2 controller as " enhanced".

Yes, it does Josh. From this thread it appears as if USB2 controllers can be
listed a few different ways by Device Manager. This listing for the USB
controller wills only good as a quick check instead of a solid confirmation.
If one can't tell from the wording here, time to dig up documentation or
look for a mark on the hardware.

Sharon:

I checked Device Manager and its says for Universal Serial Bus controllers:

Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442
Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444
Iomega USB Bus Powered Zip 250
USB Composite Device
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

I don't kow how to figure out from this information whether it's USB 1.1 or
USB 2.

I learned that because of my computer's age (1.5 to 2 years), it has to be
USB 1.1.

I'll get a USB2 card.

That would be the best thing to do. The cards are usually pretty good.

I think you've made the right decision for your system. The new cards are
pretty nice. So are the new USB2 devices. Enjoy!

I just went to my father's house and his device manager shows no USB2,
although he has two usb 2 ports. However, his USB2 manufacturer is NEC. In
device manager under the USB ports, NEC appears two times, so he knows those
are his USB2 ports.

There is a "hard"ware way to determine what kind of USB ports you have.
Take a USB2 devive from a friend and connect it to your PC.
If you have installed WINXP and the ports on your PC are USB1,
then a ballon tip which says something like "A fast device is connected to a
slow port"
will appear...!!!

No this isn't true. It will only say this if you do not have the USB2
drivers installed. If the USB2 port is functioning and installed properly,
the person will not get that message.

Now what pops up when he plugs a USB2 device into a USB1 port can still be
debated because I have no experience with that. However, with USB2 being
backwards compatible I cannot imagine something would pop up.

Just to update those who were posting to this thread. I just bought a new
computer with a new Asus motherboard. My device manager does indeed now show
the "2" with the USB. This is how I know I have USB 2, besides the fact that
I paid for it.

Hello..

Just a note to try to help.

Windows® 2000/XP

Right-click the My Computer icon and select Manage.

Note: Windows XP users may need to click Start to access the My Computer icon.

Click the Device Manager icon.

Click the plus (+) sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

Note: If Universal Serial Bus Controllers is not listed, there is a problem with the USB controller or the USB controller is not enabled in the computer's BIOS. Please contact the computer or card manufacturer for updated drivers and/or for information on how to fix or enable the USB controller.

If Enhanced Host Controller and/or USB 2.0 Root Hub Device is listed, then the computer has USB 2.0 ports.

If Universal Host Controller and/or Open Host Controller is listed, then the computer has USB 1.1 ports.

Hope this helps.....

The easiest way is If the USB ports on your computer are labeled as USB
Hi-Speed then you have USB 2.0

If you cant find that, as mentioned earlier...

Open Device Manager. For Win XP you can type devmgmt.msc in Run. Click the +
beside Universal Serial Bus controller to expand it. If the host controllers
are said to be Enhanced then you have got USB 2.0
