That depends on your motherboard and BIOS, generally the
largest RAM must go in the lowest numbered slot and the BIOS
must be set to detect RAM.

Post details of your motherboard and presently installed
RAM...

Kathy - it's usually not necessary to configure an XP-compatible computer to
recognize RAM. But...there are a couple of important tidbits of info of
which you must be aware. Before we go into that, please say what
motherboard you have, and how much memory currently installed (and how many
pieces)?
