View Full Version : Modem 'Unavailable/Missing' NOT

Teri

I just upgraded from ME to XP on my Dell Inspiron 4000 (128mbram, 700mhz).

When I create a new DUN connection it automatically shows the connection
using "Unavailable device COM1".

So, since I have a winmodem I went and got a xp compatible driver and
updated it. Nothing. COM 1 unavailable - device missing (the connectoid
says device missing, while the properties say unavailable device)

Then I read some posts that said make sure the modem is on COM 3. It is.

The next post said to check the COM port in device manager. IT is the only
one listed, and is on COM 1.

I changed it to COM 3. Nothing. Still missing.
I changed them BOTH to COM 1. Still missing.
I switched and changed COM port to 3 and the modem to 1. Nothing. device
missing.

I queried the modem and got a 'success' message.
I checked the modem in device manager and it is enabled, no conflicts and is
working properly.

However, it is not. Since the upgrade I don't even have a Dial up
Networking folder (is this usual?) nor can I select the COM port I want on
the connectoid.

How do I get the modem to work?

TIA,

Have you checked the manufcturer's website for updated WinXP drivers? IMHO
winmodems are worthless...next time get a true modem.

Thanks Bobby,

I have checked AND downloaded the XP winmodem driver. I shouldn't have to
worry about a 'next time' as I've had this modem for 3 years w/o one prob,
until I upgraded to XP. Now, with all the info listed below, it appears
missing/unavailable.
Thanks for your .02!!

I did. Thank you so much. Nothing in the article that relates to my
Unavailable/Missing device. Thanks!

After installation of the most current driver, go to device manager and
unistall the modem. Reboot and let Windows redetect the modem.....

It's worth a try...
