My Pioneer CD-Rom DVD 116 no longer reads data on CDs and
I get the following message from media player when
attempting to play music CDs from that drive "Media player
encountered an error when reading CD-Rom drive in digital
mode"

I am running Windows XP Home and have two IDE hard drives
0 and 1, and two CDROMs, an LG Read/Write burner as the
master (CDROM 0) and the pioneer CDROM DVD116 as slave
(CDROM 1). The DVD was master before and I tried
switching it to slave but it did not solve the problem.

I have an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 7500 video card and am
running Roxio Easy CD Creator Plastinum version 5.3.5.10c.

The CD burner runs fine, it plays music, reads and
processes data without a problem.

When looking at the Component Services in Event Viewer for
System, I find all kinds of errors of TYPE "Error",
SOURCE "cdrom", EVENT "11".

At bootup and when logging in SAFE MODE, the Pioneer DVD
drive can read and process Data on CDs. On normal bootup,
within the normal XP environment the Pioneer CDROM DVD
cannot read data or play music. When the same CDs are
placed in the LG CD R/W drive, the LG drive can read and
process both formats fine.

The device manager shows the Pioneer device as functioning
normally.

Since I last tried the Pioneer CDROM DVD when it worked I
have done many driver upgrades. Pioneer CDROM DVD worked
for over nine months before I noticed it no longer worked
2 days ago. I would not know where to begin in restoring
drivers. The drivers that I have upgraded include windows
XP service pack 1, the GIBSON MSI6533G drivers for the 56
K modem, AGP, IDE, Sound, Video and the Bios Upgrade, and
the ATI capture and video card drivers.

Here is a short list of my system components:

Motherboard MB, GIBSON,MSI,6533G, WITH/LAN,SIS 650
Processor Intel P4-1.6AGhz 478-PPGA 512K L2 Northwo
Memory PC2100 512MB DDR, Kingston w/Samsung chip
Two IDE 7200RPM 40G U100 MXR D740X-6L MX6L040J Hard drives
on IDE 1
CD-ROM CDRW 24x10x40 LG GCE8240B w/software (Master) on
IDE 2
Pioneer CDROM DVD 116 (Slave) on IDE 2
ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 7500 video card
Floppy Drive FD, 1.44, ALPS, DF354H090F
Modem MODEM,56K PCI USR Fax/Modem USR263095-OEM
Operating System OS, WIN XP

I am at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bob.

Running the latest DVD 116 firmware? Did the DVD 116 work w/ *WMP*
specifically at any time before?IOW, is this a WMP-only problem? Or will it
work w/ say, Winamp? Are we talking about pressed CDs, CD-R, CD-R/W, some
of these, all of these? I found the fact the error message mentioned
"digital mode" interesting, have you tried going back to analog? If you
have MS-DOS handy (even a Win98 Startup Disk will do), and DOS drivers
(generics usually OK), can it play there? Have you installed any Windows
Updates in the past few days since it last worked (might have introduce a
conflict)?
