View Full Version : CDRom DVDRom issues

My computer is as follows:
Homebuilt-
XPpro
XP1700+
512ram
Lite-on 24x CDRW
Lite-on DVDRom
etc...

I have had no problems for over a year with the system.
However just recently my optical drives have been on the
fritz. When i boot up if i have a game or music CD in a
drive they work fine and play the media perfectly. However
if i take the media out and replace it the fun begins.
When i enter the disc in the CDRW the drive spins up like
normal but when the drive should be launching autoplay or
the cd player the light goes out on the drive and it
sounds like it is spinning the disc at a very high rate of
speed. If i look at the properties of the drive it
recognizes the media in there. But if i go to either
explorer or open the drive though my computer an empty
folder opens. With the DVD drive it is much the same
except it says the drive is not accessible when i try to
open it through explorer or opening the drive through My
Computer. I have already tried uninstalling the drives and
reinstalling them. I rolled XP back to a point when i
think they were working correctly. I think it has to be
windows since both drives are on the fritz and they work
at boot up. I also tried a third drive and got the same
result. Please help!

Thank you a bunch!

Zach

Zack, do they share the same cable? If so - I'd suspect the IDE & would
disconnect then reinsert the connectors including the power. What does
your Event Viewer have to say? I'd not be so quick to blame Windows
here - can you boot into your XP CD for instance (or any bootable CD)?

Thank you for your reply- I have looked through the event
viewer but i guess i do not know what i would be looking
for. I can boot either drive with out a problem. I
reinstalled xp on an old HD I have and the clean XP
install does not have the same issues. I have completely
removed the drives cables and all and reinstalled them
nothing has worked. I have also tried the drives on the
same cable as well as seperate cables. Do you have any
idea other ideas? Are there any programs that could be
causing the error? I am about ready to give up and just
reinstall xp and start over clean.
Thanks again.

Hi Zack

OK, it appears to be XP rather than your h/w after all. The Event Viewer
can be a little impenetrable at times - you click on a link then Help &
Support tells you that there's no information available. MS's database
will presumably get filled eventually. Try:
http://eventid.net/search.asp
& see if this site comes up with more info. Other options are to
disconnect any USB devices, use msconfig.exe; Startup & selectively
disable programs (especially Roxio CDR/W s/w) that start with XP, reboot
then see if your drives will work then. Have a look at this KB article &
see if it helps:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320553
There are some links at the end to more KB articles or cut your losses &
do a repair re-install:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;315341
This should work as you will be booting from your CD & hope that clears
the problem. If a clean install ends up being the only cure, running
the Files & Settings Transfer Wizard from your existing setup may ease
the process by retaining some of your settings.

Although this won't help you now - I use Drive Image extensively to
regularly backup various volumes alternately to my main & 2nd h/d in the
event of system failures I can't solve.

Good luck
