View Full Version : Removing programs from Startup in Win XP

There are a host of programs including my HP printer that
are starting each time I start Windows. I've removed what
I can using the TaskBar/Startup folder. I removed some
from the Startup folder by changing that Preforence in
the individual program. I can't seem to find a way to
remove the Printer from the Startup Menu (Taskbar). The
instructions in the Win XP Help are very basic and don't
help! Anyone out there got any ideas about how to remove
unwanted programs from the Startup Menu/Taskbar. This Win
XP is running on an HP Compaq Presario 2596US notebook.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Besides the startup folder, things can also be run from the registry
in two places, but be aware, editing the registry is risky unless you
really know what you're doing.
You can run the program "REGEDT32" and look for the following two
keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
If, in either of those places, you see an entry that looks like the HP
software, you can delete it.
First you should make a backup of your registry in case you flub
something. Just click on the menu and export the registry. make sure
"all branches" is selected and just save a backup file.
