View Full Version : RAM problem - URGENT

I hope someone can help me, this is quite an urgent
problem.
My brother has just bought some SD RAM and installed it in
his machine. When he tried to switch the machine back on,
it would not start up - the power light on the front just
flashed then went out, and the machine gave a series of
beeps. 3 then 4 then another 3. There was a burning smell
so we switched it off. We took the RAM strip back out, and
one of the chips is burnt.
We have tried to start the machine again without the new
RAM in, but it goes through the same process with the
flashing power light and the series of beeps.
If anyone knows anything about this problem, and can help
in any way, it would be much appreciated.
This is very urgent.
Many thanks.

It is probably new motherboard time! You may try booting with known good
memory, but it may pose a risk to the memory.

Mobo is toast...do not attempt to put known good RAM in it, it may well take
it out, too.
This is why you should always be sure that the person doing modifications to
your 'puter knows what he is doing.

Sounds like you jammed really hard on the sdram to
get it in the slot and it was BACKWARDS. Then
you applied power and fried the thing. Get a known
good small cheap sdram and put it in the ram slot the
correct way to determine if you fried the motherboard
too.
later,
