Connecting laptop to PC

Both my PC and laptop are running XP.
I want to share data between the two (and only these two)
computers.
I have a network card in the PC and a fast ethernet card
in the laptop.
How do I tell the two computers to talk to each other?
Is it called a LAN or a direct cable connection?
Any simple instructions would be appreciated.

I have the two connected by Cat5 cable!

Okay then, let me clarify...

A CAT5 crossover cable would be nice...it's what you need. GO to CompUSA,
go to where the Cat5 cables are, and you'll find a crossover there, too!!!
