I prefer to display folders as list arranged by type. I
have done this for year with older Windows products
(98..). Both versions of XP (home, pro.) seem to allways
change my View settings back to some default. Why wouldn"t
they stay put!

Tom,
Increasing the folder settings cache solves this problem.
See this, from MVP Kelly Theriot:

Windows [XP] remembers 400 folder settings. When that number is reached =
some settings aren't retained any longer. You can change this to 8000 by =
adding this edit to the registry.=20
Run this edit, then reset your preferred folder options:=20
Increase Folder View Options Limit: (Line 2):

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it =
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad =
by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

I'm having the same problem, except it extends to the
quicklaunch toolbar forgetting it needs to be shown, and
what shortcuts to show as well. I found a bug in TweakUI
that creates a registry key as Bag MRU instead of BagMRU,
and fixed that, and I've changed the folder cache value
from 400 to 8000, with no luck. What else might cause
windows to forget?
