View Full Version : XP will not load

Giga-Byte GA-KNXP MB supports 800 FSB & Hyperthreading
with onboard RAID support
Intel 3.0 GHZ 800 FSB w/Hyperthreading CPU
Twin Sticks Kingston DDR400 Memory
Windows XP Home Edition

Have tried to load on a single Quantum IDE Drive and 2 WD
36 gig RAPTORS SATA drives configured in a striped array.
Drives in either configuration are recognized and XP start
to load but never completes successfully. Always get the
blue fault screen. After enough tries (aborts at different
places but sometimes it will finish), I can coax it
through to finish but never in a stable configuration.
Last night I was able to load Windows ME with no problems
at all, however ME does not make use of the hyperthreading.
Question 1: Where do I go from here?
Question 2: Would windows 2000 be the direction to go if
XP can't handle it.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Marv

Go to the site of the motherboard mfr to see if there are special
winxp drivers that have to be loaded on initial setup. Like on
almost the very first page of setup there is a screen that says
press F6 to load special drivers, etc.

For most RAID enabled controllers and if you are using RAID
then there is usually a special driver that will install RAID
support.

If you don't load these drivers at initial setup winxp will
never install correctly.

Hi Marv

First thing to check for you...

Which BIOS version are you using?... latest available from Gigabyte is F5

http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/BIOS/BIOS_GA-8KNXP%20Ultra.htm

Not many other updates on that site for obvious reasons.

Hope that helps

Thanks Pete, I have tried F3,F4,F5 with no luck.

Hi Marv

Which controller are you loading when you're prompted to 'press F6 for
third party SCSI or RAID drivers' during XP installation?
I think I'm right in saying you have the Silicon Image controller for SATA.
They usually supply both a SATALink and a SATARaid controller?
Did Gigabyte supply a floppy disk or just a CD? Have you correctly created
the necessary floppy?
If you have both SATA drives in a RAID array then you should be using the
SATARaid controller.
Do you 'see' 1 72Gb drive or 2 36Gb drives during the XP install?

BTW, XP has no problem with hyper-threading.

Hi again Marv

One other thought, since I've been flicking through your mobo manual. Do
you have the "Top Performance" option in your BIOS enabled? It's
recommended that if you experience stability problems you should disable
this function.

Hope some of that helps

I am using the SiliconImage chip. Have tried the drivers
from both the motherboard cd and have also downloaded it
from the SiliconImage site. I have actually tried two
versions 1.0.0.25 and 1.0.0.28. Strangly XP does not like
the most recent version (not complient with XP) but will
accept the older version. No problem with creating the
raid and XP will see the raid. Thought the raid might be
my original problem but problems also occur with a single
normal ide disk. Will try the video driver this weekend. I
temporarily bought a cheap card for now and the screen
keeps blanking out for a moment during XP loading. I look
for your other suggestion, don't remember seeing that in
the cmos section. Still looking for other drivers I can
update. I have a feeling it has got to be a driver. Sent
an email to Giga-Byte but havn't heard anything. Thanks
for your help.

Hi Marv

I'd advise you to only use drivers supplied by your motherboard manufacturer
for any integrated chips or controllers. For example the SATA controller
drivers from the Silicon Image website are specifically for their PCI card
version. Some motherboard manufacturers, e.g. Asus, have been known to
tweak the controller for various reasons including compatibility with the
other on-board features - that's probably why the more recent Silicon Image
driver doesn't work while the giga-byte supplied one does.

Your motherboard manual should tell you about the Top Performance feature,
it's worth making sure that it is disabled if you're having a problem with
stability. Basically it seems to work as an over-clocking facility. It's
detailed, briefly, on page number 63 (in the pdf view it's p 25 of 70) of
the 'manual_8knxpu_e_3.pdf' file, available from the giga-byte website.

Post an update on your progress when you can

Good luck
Pete

You might try setting to DDR333, as the current bios has difficulty
running at DDR400 with many systems. Gigabyte tech support says that
the F6 bios that addresses the memory timing is coming soon.

Sincerely,
Paul Rubin

BINGO!....How many hours of frustration Giga-Byte could
have saved me by responding to my email. Still havn't
heard from them. Dropped it down to 333 and XP loaded
with only one minor problem. No fault pages. How great it
was to see it go through to completion! I had my back up
against the wall. Had tried everything I could possible
think of. I enjoy a good challenge when building a new
machine (you learn alot) but this was getting much to
frustrating and time comsuming.
Thanks alot!!! for taking the time to respond.

Hi Pete,
Don't know if you caught the response from Paul Rubin.
Suggested that I lower the memory speed from 400 to 333.
That did the trick. XP loaded the first time I tried it.
Thanks for taking the time to respond!

Hi Marv

I did indeed catch Paul's suggestion. Good of Gigabyte to tell everyone
buying their mainboards about that particular problem, eh?

Glad you've got your system up and running.... and when Gigabyte get their
act together you can update the BIOS to get the system you paid for.

You're most welcome Marv, I'm glad I can help a fellow
computer builder. I know just how frustrating these issues
can be! BTW, I have received a beta F6 BIOS from Giga-Byte
which I haven't yet tried; wanna give it a go? I have it
uploaded at:
