Is there anything I can do to block pop-ups within
Windows XP, without buying special software? Also, how do
I find out what version of Internet Explorer I have?

There are two kinds of "pop-ups" that people complain about. Those generated
from a web page via the browser and those generated via the messenger
service. To solve your problem, you need to know which pop-up you want to
block.

The web browser pop-ups are easily blocked by a variety of free programs.
I've tried several of them and have currently settled on "Pop Up Stopper"
from PanicWare. You can find it on the web.

The other kind are generated by Microsoft's Messenger service. Personally,
the very first thing I did to personalize XP on my machine was to remove the
Messenger. You can find instructions on how to do this at:

and look down at line 33.

Good luck....
