View Full Version : PREFETCH

I read somewhere that a weekly dump of the files in the
Windows Prefetch folder will speed up my machine.

Now upon trying to restore a file from @backup I get an
error message saying "Prefetch file not found."

What is prefetch? How do files get into prefetch?

I'd appreciate help on this matter.

Thanks

prefetch is a method for windows so that applications load much faster.

what it does is monitor the applications that start upon start up and the
applications you open. it then stores some information into the prefetch
folder (default is c:\windows\prefetch) so that the next time you boot your
computer up, the files which your applications would need are read before
hand and stored in its memory.

you can always erase the files in the prefetch folder. however, upon
booting up your computer after you have deleted the files, the computer will
boot up slower than usual (because it has not prefetched the files earlier)
but then during this time, your xp would already be recording what it needs
to prefetch the next time you boot your computer up.

hope this helps.

What you read it a myth! Windows XP will periodically purge the
prefetch file on its own. If you totally delete the prefetch file, you
will actually eXPerience a slowdown in performance. Don't believe
everything you read if there is no substantiation.
