the sound coming out of the computer was
scratchy/skipping a little so i tried changing speakers
but this made no difference. i updated the drivers (it
was a diamond tech card) but this didn't help either. so
then i bought a new sound card, a maddog prowler 4.1.
this also didn't help. there are no hardware conflicts
either. so now i'm confused. any suggestions? also, i
noticed that for shorter sounds like the windows startup
noise or random windows noises (asterisk, etc), there is
no problem. it is only when i play songs. any help
would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi George,

When you say "play songs," do you mean songs that are actually on your hard
drive, songs that are on a removable medium such as a CD, or both? Could be
an IRQ issue. Motherboards often are picky about which PCI slot you install
your sound card into. Sometimes a move to a slot further away from your
graphics card helps. If the sound issue you describe only occurs when
you're playing a CD, it could be a CD/DVD drive issue such as cabling/IDE
channel position or a drive BIOS issue.
