In my house there are two computers that share an
internet connection - they are not networked. It is dial-
up internet so only one machine can be online at a time.
Normally, when the 1st computer is online and the 2nd
tries to connect, the 2nd will have no dialing tone, and
will have to wait until the 1st computer comes offline.
But sometimes, the 1st computer is online, and when the
2nd tries to connect, it succeeds and forces the 1st
off. Is there any way to prevent this?

Hmm. Rachel, there should be a setting - in the connection properties of
the #2 comp - that instructs the modem to wait until it gets a dial tone
before attempting to connect. Sniff around a bit in the various properties
windows and see what you can discover re: the settings for this.

Back to you.

Thank you both.

The two computers use the same phone line.

I checked both computers - they both claim to wait for a
dialing tone before dialing.

Hmm. Well, Rachel, I'm afraid I'm stumped on this one. There is a teensy
possibility that there is a wiring anomaly in the telco jacks into which you
have your 2 comps plugged, but I doubt it. A couple of questions come to
mind;

Did this setup used to work before? For how long? Was there some sort of
change that gave rise to this problem? (What?)

Also, are you able to use a telephone in either of the jacks into which the
comps are plugged? (This would indicate that there are no problems with the
telco jacks.)

Do you have call waiting? If so, do you have the necessary disabling code
entered into the dialling properties for comp #1? (This is in case comp #1
perceives the signal from comp #2 as a second incoming call...and
[therefore] disconnects)

Jeepers! Homework! 'Bet you thought you were done with that, eh?
Back to you.
Ron
