Windows Media Series 9 Avi problem

Hey. When I try to launch an avi, Media player attempts
to download the avi codec (which it shoild already have),
and fails to download it. Afterwards, it attempts to play
the avi file, and says "Windows Media Player cannot play
the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does
not support the format you are trying to play." Not that
I like using these programs for avi or anything else, but
I also tried avis in Quicktime and Winamp. Quicktime said
it didnt have the proper plugin, and Winamp launched
right into it, but would only deliver sound. Because of
what Winamp has done, I know the files aren't corrupt. I
have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling media
player... Any suggestions?

AVI files can be compresed or uncompressed. An uncompressed AVI will take
up approximately 12gb of hard drive space per hour.....so you probably won't
find many online - and if you did, you probably wouldn't try downloading
them.

So we come to the conclusion that the AVI file you want to play is
compressed... and in order to be able to play it, you need to know which
particular codec it is compressed with.

Happily someone wrote something that will help

Let G-Spot analyze the AVI and once you know which codec encoded and
compressed the file, you can download them, install them and the file will
play.
