My machine will no longer boot to the hard drive where
windows xp rules the world. XP came on the machine, I do
not have a bootable XP disk, just a backup copy. Any
suggestions?

Hi
Well you may want to check and see if your pc came with
a recovery disk, and if your hard drive is bad you will have
to purcahse a new and also purchase XP Hm or XP Pro
depending on which you had. What is your pc model or type

Hi Alvin,
Thanks for your response. I have an emachine circa 2001.
As I try to boot to the hard drive, I get a message that
xp is sorry but windows did not start properly. I can
choose from options such as start normally [which repeats
this cycle], to start in safe mode [which starts listing
files always stopping at the same place on the list and
locking up], to start at command prompt [which goes no
where]. I recently installed office xp which was working
fine. A tech guy from emachines had me reloading defaults
at the cmos menu with no luck. I can get a command prompt
thought the cd rom but can not go to the hard drive from
DOS ... tech guy said something about hard drive having a
ntfs partition. If I purchased a personal version of XP do
you think it would install over the OEM version, if the
hard drive isn't toast, that is! Thanks again! Nancy

Hello Nancy
Well when you reboot you should have the option to use Last Known
Good, if that fails, then reboot and press F8 go inot safe mode and
lets see if your able to boot inot safe mode. Let that process complete
and then login, if that also fails then you may have a bad drive or XP
may need to be reloaded, but when you purcahse that pc, you should
have gotten an recovery cdrom, can you verify if you were given on.
Keep me posted ok

You are very kind to think about my problem, Alvin!
Last known good configuration flashes a blue screen that I
can't read as it goes by too fast. I catch a glimpse of
the words physical memory. If I try safe mode, a list of
files appears and gets stuck at agp440.sys. The disk that
came with the machine is called a restore disk and is to
reset everything back to the manufacturer's machine,
erasing all other files. I'm afraid that I'm not real
faithful about backing things up and want to consider all
other options before that!
Do you know of any disk utility type products that would
let me look at the C drive from a cd rom independent of
windows xp?
Can XP be "reloaded" from backup disks ... independent of
windows xp?
Could I try installing windows 98, to preserve data ...
then upgrade to xp?
This is so sad ...

Hi Nancy
Well I do not recommed reloading win 98 and you may
and may not be able to read some of your files. Since you don't
have a win xp cdrom you can't perform a repair install and
you will need a win xp cdrom to complete that process. Send
me an email ok
Another option would be to maybe (it's a long shot) but to setup
your hard as a slave in another pc but you don't have that option)
Send me an email
