While my computer was being scan for an upgrade to windows
xp from windows 98se I received a report that has blocking
issues. It is a highpoint HPT366 ultra DMA controller. Do
I need to replace this controller or I am better off
buying a new computer? I have a pentiun III 450 MHz about
five years old. Will the controller will turn into a
motherboard issue as well?

thanks you all

Joe

Your best bet is to buy, or better build, a new computer. Your processor is
slow, your memory is probably too little and slow, and modem, video card,
etc out of date. Prices are low now. You may be able to use your old
monitor. Bare bones systems are a good bargain at the discount places.

The controller is part of the motherboard. BY the time you
replace the motherboard and the CPU and the RAM, you'll have
spent almost as much as the cost of a new Dell (lowest price
models under $600 and they come with XP, CD-RW and a new
guarantee).

Keep the old computer, save money and time buy something
new.

You can try some beta XP drivers for the HPT366 from:

ftp://geerynet.d2g.com/Highpoint/

Unzip them onto a floppy.

In order to get XP to install, you will have to manually remove the HPT366
drivers from 98SE. (Search the Windows folder for file names containing
"366". It may be obvious what ones are the Highpoint drivers; some of the
files may not be drivers. I can't recall the exact details, as it's been a
while.)

Then, during the XP installation, use F6 at the correct time to install
third-party disk controller drivers.

I did this with a Soyo 6BA+IV board. However, I can't tell you how the
HPT366 drivers worked - I never used them. I replaced their function with a
Promise Ultra100TX2 IDE controller card, which is a cheap oldish card that
is still fully supported under XP. (XP comes with drivers for it, so no use
of F6 was required.) I've seen the card for as little as $15 US, although
$25 would be a reasonable price.

Good luck.
