Becky,
Try turning off the computer, unplug the power from
the modem, wait a minute and plug the power back in the
modem. Restart the computer. Most cable modems are fairly
transparent and work with XP without changing settings.
Hopefully you haven't disconnected the cable from the
modem. If so, you may have to contact your provider to re-
activate it. Check with your provider on what they charge
to install the modem with the new computer. If it's $20
or so, it's not worth your time NOT calling them. Check-
out the knowledge base here at microsoft for
troubleshooting info and also try using the internet
troubleshooting wizard in XP. Read over the installation
instructions provided by your internet provider. Good
Luck.

Unplugging the modem from the cable will have no affect on the
modem...I've unhooked mine, took it on a six hour road trip, then
plugged it into the same cable provider's system at the new location
and it worked just fine. No need to "set up" anything; it worked just
like it did while I was still at home.
