Is there anyway to get the USB 2 drivers apart from Windows Update and
Service Pack 1?
I'd like to download them separately and store them on my HD for later use?

Having recently installed an add-in PCI USB2 card and an external Hard drive
running on USB2, i can only tell you that i tried to install 3rd party
drivers that came with the USB card and Xp kick them out in favor of XP
native drivers... The software that came with the external enclosure that
holds the HD (i had a spare IBM DeskStar 40gig that i used) does not seem to
make a difference. What i have decided is that Windows Xp will only
recognize its own drivers for USB 2......Period.

Whenever i access the HD (which does work quite well, although i don't
think "as fast as advertised") i get a small usb icon in the taskbar, which,
when cliked, indicates that i have a high speed device connected to a low
speed USB (what?) and it shows the 4 USB2 ports as being available with
nothing connected..Suggesting that i re-connect the HD to one of these, in
other words.. It IS hooked to one of those!.... So, XP sees the USB2 card
with the USB 2 ports, it allows me to hook the HD up and run it, but does
NOT see that the HD is connected to one of these... I have contiued to be
puzzled by this, and yes, i do have SP1 installed..

Because of licensing agreements, i have read on VIA site for example, that
USB2 drivers are not available for seperate download...... Your guess about
this is as good as mine.. I am only passing on what i have found in my
rather lengthy USB odyssey and hope it answers some of your questions(?)

Peter,

You state "doesn't work as fast as advertised". How can you expect it to
when the OS is telling you that it's not hooked up properly (on a low speed
USB connection)..

Also, I have a NEC chip based 4 port PCI card and can use either the
NEC or Microsoft drivers which makes me believe you don't have your
hardware set up properly.

Thanks for the information.
I'll continue to hunt for separate USB2 drivers from MS.

I did download and use the ones from Intel and they work fine for my
board/chipset,
but it's becoming a bit of a challenge to track down the MS ones.

I have a similar problem, bought a no-name USB 2.0 PCI card from
overstock.com (one that came with a CD with "Dervers" on it, not
"Drivers"!) I installed it earlier this year--before I installed SP1
for XP, as far as I recall. Everything went just fine...unplugged my
Epson scanner from the USB 1.0 ports from my motherboard, plugged it
into a port on the new card, and immediately could see the transfer
rate increase dramatically. Didn't have any problems after installing
SP1, either...transfer rate stayed high, nothing at all happened out
of the ordinary. Used the scanner numerous times over about 3 months,
all went well.

However, last night I needed to scan for the first time in a month or
so...and got errors, no matter what software I used--couldn't start
the TWAIN module with Adobe Photoshop Elements or a copy utility,
various dialog boxes indicated that the device wasn't found.
Uninstall/reinstalling the Epson scanner drivers didn't correct the
problem as I hoped it would...finally I just plugged the scanner into
a front-panel 1.0 port off the MB, and it worked immediately! Plugged
my Wacom tablet into any of the 2.0 ports on the PCI card--didn't
recognize it at all, but again, no problem if plugged into a 1.0 port
off the MB.

Decided to remove the items related to the VIA 2.0 host controller in
Device Manager, reboot, and let XP try and fix itself. It did detect
new hardware, and loaded drivers--I didn't catch all the messages that
displayed that popped up above the systray as things loaded, but one
of them did include "2.0" in its description. Now, the ports on the
2.0 PCI card work--but I get the same dialog box as Peter
describes...that I have plugged a hi-speed device into a low speed
port, but the list below includes the port to which the scanner is
already connected! While the scanner works, it seems as if the card is
not really operating at USB 2.0 rates, but maybe only 1.0 (1.1?)

Can anyone tell me exactly what I should see in Device Manager? The
original install ended up with an entry for "Via Enhanced 2.0 Host
Controller", or something similar, and now there are no entries that
include a "2.0" designation. What driver files should be present when
I click on the entry for the Via host controller and/or the USB root
hub entries?

Is it possible that the order in which drivers are loaded can make a
difference? For some reason, after I completed a Windows Update a few
weeks ago, the icons in the systray pop up in a different order than
before. The desktop appears more quickly than it did before, but it
seems as if the systray icons take longer to appear, too. Is there any
possibility that some other updated item now creates a problem with
the VIA USB controller?

Thanks very much!

Solved the problem.......uninstalled every item listed in the USB
section in Device Manager, then rebooted. Everything is OK now using
exclusively MS supplied driver files from XP SP1--no files from the
"derver" CD are still listed. No more messages about hi-speed device
on lo-speed port with USB 2.0 scanner connected to USB 2.0 PCI card.
