View Full Version : Cannot boot to XP Pro

I am building a new system for my girlfriend. AMD 2400+, 512mb RAM, ASUS
A7S333, GeForce 4 MX-SE, 120gb Seagate. The problem: XP installs fine, but
when the install is finshed and it's booting into windows (user selection
screen), it just restarts (and this will go on forever and I can't even boot
into safe mode). All I get is the boot screen, and then when it tries to
change screen resolution, that's when it happens. Should I have any reason
to believe that it's not related to the video card? As a note, for kicks,
we installed Windows 98, and it worked just fine. If anyone has any idea of
what's going on, could you please help me?

Have you set BIOS to "Load BIOS defaults", esp. for Advanced Chipset
Features?

Yes, I tried that already. The only thing I really know to do now is try my
old PCI graphics card in her system to see if I can get in to at least view
some of the logs. Otherwise, I'm just going to tell her to send all of her
hardware back to where she bought it and to go buy a Dell (lol). I'm just
kidding. I would never wish that upon anyone. It just baffles me that
Win98 would work, but XP wouldn't.

Anyway, if there's anyone out there who has experienced this, or knows what
may be causing this or maybe even a workaround, any help would be greatly
appreciated. I really hate to see all that new hardware being wasted on
windows98.

BIOS settings for power supply? Maybe a jumper on the
motherboard which needs to be set to allow a normal boot?
Maybe a bad video driver?

Turn on the power, press F8, at the boot menu, enter the
BIOS and check all the settings.

try different settings in your bios for the video card or use a pci card and
see if that will work. sounds like an AGP error.
once in to windows xp get AGP drivers from for your motherboard. your
mothrboard has a SiSŪ 745 chipset and xp probably didn't load it right.
