Why do so many PC's running 2000 and XP have floppy problems?

Hi all

I have suddenly developed this problem since upgrading from Me to XP,
and of the 3 PC's at work, with 2000, only one of them can read, write
to or format a floppy.

Is there a reason for this and a way to get around it?
